San Francisco School Busing Boycott Losing Momentum

San Francisco school officials say the boycott of public schools over citywide integration and busing has waned. About 4,000 students are still out, with 1,000 unaccounted for, while Catholic and private schools have drawn 4,000 and 1,500 pupils respectively. Estimates vary, with other figures suggesting up to 10,000 out, including 3,000 in freedom schools. Officials cite attendance declines and neighborhood resistance, notably in Chinatown, amid ongoing disagreement over enrollment and the busing plan.
