Dockers warned speed up work or face heavy fines

The federal government threatens $250,000 daily fines for contempt of court against the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union and the Pacific Maritime Association if cargo handling at Southland ports does not speed up. Judge William T. Sweigert urged both sides to keep ports operating this weekend with a further hearing set for Tuesday. Cargo delays stem from a 10 day strike, leaving Viet Nam bound ships to depart Oakland with reduced cargo and risking Pacific military supply operations. The dispute centers on the steady-men job category and other contract issues.
