Missing harbor patrolman safe after near disaster
High winds gusting to 50 mph battered Southern California before noon Thursday. A Santa Monica harbor patrolman was swept to sea in a 20‑foot skiff off El Segundo. a 10‑hour search ended when a Coast Guard helicopter spotted him about 16 miles south of El Segundo and the cutter Point Bridge rescued him.
