The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 2.75 at 949.57 after a volatile session on New York trading floor. Volume eased to about 16.08 million shares as the market fluctuated and major indexes posted modest advances led by technology and bank shares.
Wall Street spent most of the day in profit taking after new highs, reacting to a government report showing consumer prices rose 2.6 percent annual rate last month. Stocks firmed slightly near the close as First National Bank of St. Louis cut its prime rate from 8 to 7 1/4 percent, while the American Stock Exchange index edged down and the NASDAQ composite rose.
