San Francisco mayoral hopeful Alioto defends himself amid a 2.2 million fraud suit involving 13 agencies and a federal bribery conspiracy indictment set for trial in January. He says his legal woes are the campaign issue while pledging to close the race gap and push downtown redevelopment, subway opening, and the removal of an elevated waterfront freeway.
Rep John Schmitz of California said he would be willing to join a conservative primary effort against President Nixon within the GOP. He noted such a challenge would remind the President conservatives oppose his engagement with Communist China. Schmitz, linked to United Republicans of California, discussed leading a conservative slate in California's June primary and suggested a collective effort with other conservatives.
