Sea Scouts seek trade of 89 foot Argus for smaller fiberglass hull

Orange County Sea Scouts face limits with the 89 foot wooden Argus, a three masted schooner donated years ago. The ship requires a master mariner skipper, cannot be charged for rides, and is costly to maintain. County leaders propose trading for a smaller fiberglass craft and easing skipper recruitment. The Argus measures 89 feet waterline and 109 feet overall, built about 40 years ago in Denmark. The Board of Supervisors pledged 442,750 to rebuild the Sea Scout base and consider opening it to girls under anti discrimination rules.
