Sadat in a National Assembly speech urged immediate reopening of the Suez Canal after Egyptian forces secure the east bank. Mansfield pressed a six power summit to end the war and argued against US troop commitments.

Middle East fighting widens with Israeli raids and Arab push

Cairo and Tel Aviv dispatches report combined air sea and land fighting on both sides of the Suez Canal. An Israeli spokesman said a large task force crossed to the east bank and struck antiaircraft batteries while Egyptian forces claimed to destroy several tanks and pursue others. Sadat warned of missiles against Israel but sought a cease-fire with conditions. Meir stated no cease-fire offer had been received as fierce battles continued in Sinai and the Golan Heights amid reports of Syrian and Iraqi advances and Uganda's Idi Amin offering troops to aid Syria and Egypt.

Love warns oil supply could drop 10 percent if Arab output stalls

White House energy policy director John A. Love told the National Press Club that a complete Arab oil shutdown could cut U S supplies by about ten percent. He noted Europe and Japan would suffer more, as their oil reliance from Middle East and North Africa is high, and warned the shortage could worsen before improving. He opposed end use rationing and any bureaucratic limits on personal car use while suggesting private cars and recreational vehicles would be lowest priority. State Department spokesman McCloskey said no official Saudi or other Arab oil cut has been received.

SACRAMENTO The California Board of Equalization voted 2-1 in favor of a property tax exemption for a religious organization that produces sex films.
