Jett's Petting Zoo returns to Fifth Street at Pine Avenue featuring 50 animals including llamas burros goats and deer. Hours run Wednesday to Saturday and Sunday noon to 5 with free admission and minimal rides charge.
Melinda Bateman and her brother David bring ragtime Dixieland and modern tunes to the 320 Pine Ave bandstand. The act features banjo vocals and piano cordovox with a repertoire from the Roaring Twenties to today. Performances are Thursday 4 4 50 pm Friday 5 5 30 pm and Saturday 8 12 noon.
The California National Guard will show armored and support equipment on Pine Avenue between 5th and 6th during Gand Old Days Thursday through Saturday. Demonstrations include ambu lance, truck, jeep, machine shop and signal gear with a recruiting van. The Guard launches Operation Grizzly to boost community involvement and offer personal advancement opportunities.
A special Live Trout fishing pond runs Thursday through Saturday at Jett's Petling Zoo in Downtown Long Beach. The event offers 50 cent fishing for minutes or one fish, with all catches placed in a plastic bag for take-home. Located on Fifth Street near Pine Avenue, staff assist to remove trout and ensure safe fishing as 600 fish are available.
Doro thy Monnier and other Long Beach Animal Shelter members host the 2st Annual Good Of Days featuring puppies and kittens for adoption. Snoopy will appear as a doghouse display to greet children and hand out roadies.
Cedar Avenue and Ocean Boulevard landmark market spans 61 years. Good Ol Days Farmers Market at Fifth and Pine Avenue invites visitors to browse or shop during store hours Thursday Friday and Saturday. George Gray the Slot Doctor will exhibit antique slot machines on Pine Avenue during the event.
The Verdugo Hills Chapter of the Sweet Adelines, current 1977 Regional Champion, will compete for the World Championship in Los Angeles in 1978. They perform at 320 Fine Avenue on Saturday from 9 10 to 9 30 a.m. and noon to 12 30 p.m. The chapter, chartered March 1, 1954, has medaled in every competition since 1968 and holds the Regional Champion Chorus title. Directed by Joni Bescos, a contest judge and noted barbershop Harmony arranger and author.
Walter Koenig who plays Ensign Chekov on Star Trek will appear Saturday at 1 p.m. at the band stand 320 Pine Ave. The actor discusses diverse past roles and current writing projects while looking ahead to the new Star Trek series filming in November.
The downtown Long Beach Good Ol Days celebration features an antique costume contest with a $50 grand prize and ten $10 certificates awarded Friday at 2 30 p m at 318 Pine Ave. Past entries mix jazz age looks with prairie and vintage replicas, as locals craft costumes and rent outfits to join the fun.
Organist John Scot, theater organist and pianist, will perform at Good Ol Days on Thursday and Friday from noon to 12 30 p m and Saturday from 3 to 3 30 p m.
