A Metro hospital official described worsening conditions and chaotic patient surges at Norwalk during an open admissions period. Dr Mal Towery, new associate clinical director, said admissions of acute cases have begun to be limited to relieve overcrowding and abuses cited in the troubled facility.
Towery, an assistant to Metropolitan Hospital's medical director, tells a Long Beach Mental Health Association meeting that 209 more acutely ill psychiatric patients entered monthly, straining beds, closets, toilets and showers. He cites chaotic bed flow as a key issue and notes recent patient deaths prompting a state hospital system probe.
The report notes offenses not up to Sept 10 and excludes disclosures at Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk and Camarillo State Hospital. Two Metropolitan patient deaths are under homicide investigation as staff threats to cover abuses are reported. Camarillo’s Venora County Grand Jury probes 55 patient deaths while hospital employees show at least 23 offenses labeled patient abuse in two years, including slapping and unnecessary roughness. Gary Mark Gilmore, awaiting a Utah Board of Pardons decision on his death sentence, died in an apparent suicide pact with Nicole Barrett who was found in a coma in her Provo apartment. Barrett had told a friend of their pact. Gilmore had requested execution by firing squad.
