Sinking Carnelian crew cling to logs in Pacific rescue
Sailors from the sunken lumber ship Carnelian, 1400 miles northwest of Honolulu, clung to logs and boarded life rafts as a rescue effort battled 40 foot swells. A Coast Guard spokesman said fewer than half of the 33 crew were rescued, with ships and planes racing to reach the stricken freighter amid shifting cargo and stormy seas. Weather officials described the area as lashed by winds up to 60 mph and 30 foot swells, the worst weather of the year. The vessel was owned by Mitsui OSK Line of Japan and had aboard a deckload of lumber that broke loose before sinking.
