Utah Supreme Court reversed to allow Gary Mark Gilmore to face a firing squad Monday. The ruling followed a hearing in which Gilmore sought to die, with potential interventions by groups including the ACLU and NAACP. Gov. Rampton will decide reprieve options as the board meets.
The EPA announced a controversial new air pollution enforcement policy that would allow a new polluting industry in areas not meeting federal air standards. It would enable Standard Oil Co of Ohio to progress with its Alaska oil terminal at Long Beach by trading emissions reductions within the same region to achieve no net increase. The policy, described as a compromise, was unveiled by EPA deputy administrator John R. Quarles Jr. at Anaheim and drew immediate criticism from the National Clean Air Coalition and allied groups.
Syrian tanks and troops entered Beirut from three directions to establish control and aid a peacekeeping mission amid ongoing fighting between Muslim and Christian militias. Amid bombardment, 20 people were reported killed and thousands displaced as a multinational force plans to deploy up to 30,000 troops from Saudi Arabia Libya Yemen and UAE to end the 19 month conflict.
A key figure connected to the two year old Naeenah Smith murder in Los Angeles was questioned and released after meeting with detectives. Washington AP reports October retail sales rose three tenths of a percent to 54.06 billion after seasonal adjustment. September figures were revised to a 1.3 percent drop, leaving monthly sales about level with June. Sales remain 81 percent ahead of a year ago, but lag the pre-stagnation inflation run.
U S Agriculture Department reports a record 1976 corn crop of 6.06 billion bushels. The harvest should slow retail food price increases through mid 1977 and help restore global grain reserves as 1976 production nears a near record.
A 9th Circuit panel ruled that about 125 tuna vessels must stop fishing to protect porpoises. The ban, affecting San Diego-based boats, could cost fishermen roughly 22 million dollars through year end.
President-elect Jimmy Carter announced eleven transition team members and said daily intelligence briefings will begin under CTA direction. He plans meetings with Henry Kissinger and a Signal Corps center will operate at his Plains home as he returns to Georgia. Carter described the vacation as restful and productive while noting briefings from CLA Director George Bush and ongoing study notebooks.
