Proxmire Alleges Sweetheart Plant Deal With Lockheed
Senator William Proxmire accuses the U.S. Air Force of subsidizing Lockheed’s commercial L 1011 by renting a government plant at Palmdale for 16 072 monthly while the C 5A program costs soar. He points to government payments up to 90 percent of costs and calls the arrangement a sweetheart contract. He notes Navy and missile contracts for Lockheed add to a pattern of government aid. Proxmire argues the commercial risk stems from the L 1011 venture and rival Boeing’s 747.
