Pope elevates Hanoi archbishop as cardinal amid church splits
Pope Paul II elevated Arch bishop Joseph Marie Trinh Shu Khue of Hanoi to the Sacred College of Cardinals along with Laszlo Lekai of Hungary. The consistory expanded cardinals from Communist countries to five and drew cheers for Archbishop William Baum in Washington. The Pope denounced extremists in the church, criticized Lefebvre, and hinted at moves toward greater internationalization of the College.
