Rep Wayne Hays of Ohio publicly acknowledged a personal relationship with Elizabeth Ray, a woman claiming a $14,000 yearly congressional salary as his mistress. He denied she was hired for sex and said he spoke to repair damage to his six week old marriage.
A sealed federal indictment in San Diego accuses 19 defendants including eight Americans of an international Laetrile smuggling conspiracy. The 71 overt acts span two Tijuana plants with large drug exports. Lead figure Andrew R. L. McNaughton, a Sausalito and Tijuana operator, is named with ties to Cyta Pharma de Mexico. The case, after a yearlong probe, risks 20 years in prison and fines up to $25,000 per count.
Ford scored unexpected victories in Tennessee and Kentucky along with Oregon, while Reagan swept Arkansas Idaho and Nevada. Carter dominated Arkansas Kentucky Tennessee for Democrats, Church won Oregon, boosting anti Carter effort. Reagan led delegates briefly. Ford remained favored with 775 to 642 in GOP totals. Carter neared a Democratic nominating majority with 876 of needed 1,805.
A Long Beach man, Tony Oliver Williams, was shot in the back at 7:45 am while running from Leander Godfrey's Walnut Avenue home. Williams collapsed nearby and died at St Mary Medical Center from an 82 caliber revolver wound. Godfrey was jailed on murder charges with motive undetermined.
President Ford told the Los Angeles Press Club he would not dismiss Henry Kissinger over policy disputes and would submit any nuclear arms deal to Congress whether it helped or hurt him in the election. He defended Kissinger as a “darn good” secretary of State, while campaigning in California ahead of the June 8 primary and amid Reagan attacks. Ford emphasized progress toward Middle East peace and argued U S support for Israel remains strong with aid totaling about 4 billion dollars in recent budgets. He drew an estimated 25 000 people at Walnut Creek and planned to campaign in Ohio before returning to Washington.
Secretary of State Kissinger said a report from Fidel Castro that Cuban troops began withdrawing from Angola is a positive development if confirmed. Palme relayed Castro’s claim of 200 soldiers a week. Kissinger warned a full timetable or partial drawdown must meet U.S. conditions for relations with Angola and Cuba.
An American Airlines 747 carrying 22 passengers diverted back to Kennedy Airport after a four by four foot wing fiberglass fillet tore away in gusts over Har tshure Pennsylvania. The captain declared a precautionary return and the jet landed safely with no injuries.
At Dulles a Concorde test flight showed 129 decibels far above airport limits, intensifying opposition to supersonic service. The Air France craft drew mild local reactions, while a British Airways plane caused little disruption as both returned to Europe amid legal questions over New York noise bans. Captain Duval said higher climb with afterburners aimed to limit noise near populated areas.
A package from Indonesia addressed to Aeroflot in New Delhi exploded at the international airport causing minor damage, no injuries. A JAL spokesman noted the box came via Singapore and Bangkok. Indian police launched an investigation.
