Nursing professor balances service and teaching
Barbara Russell, assistant professor of nursing at California State College Long Beach, leads a double life as a clinician and educator. She hospitals nurses newborns at St. Mary’s, teaches maternity and child health, volunteers at the Free Clinic, and serves as a Capt. in the 68th Aeromedical Evacuation Unit. Born in Batavia, N.Y., she earned a BS from the University of Buffalo and a master's from UCLA, joining CS Long Beach faculty in 1967. She advocates student independence, mentors through family-centered projects, and earns respect reflected in a student tribute beside a Khalil Gibran quote on her office wall.
