Drivers urged to observe 55 mph limit over Memorial Day weekend

Federal official Frank G. Zarb urged motorists to comply with the 55 mph national speed limit during the three day weekend. He cited Memorial Day traffic deaths last year at 390 and noted the decline from 1973 due to the limit. Awards were to be given to California and Wyoming highway patrols for enforcement efforts. Officials said the measure saves about 100,000 barrels of oil daily if speeds stay under 55.
