Senate unit OKs bill to curb milk controls

The California Senate approved Sen. Clare Berryhill’s milk pricing bill 21 to 13 to trim state controls while preserving some price minimums. The measure would remove the food and agriculture director’s power to set prices, require grocers to sell at wholesale plus 16.6 percent, and grant temporary reimposition authority to handle severe market disruptions. Critics said the plan changes little and could leave dairy prices largely unchanged.
