Suspect Bremer cheered Wallace before shooting governor

A 21 year old Milwaukee man, Arthur Bremer, is in custody as the suspect in Governor George Wallace's shooting at a Laurel Maryland shopping center. Neighbors describe him as withdrawn with political interests from Wallace to birth control. Police found gun gear and a Confederate flag in his Milwaukee apartment along with writings and a note about happiness. Bremer reportedly wrote of killing himself and showed violence fantasies linked to Wallace.

Ticonderoga ordered for Vietnam duty in Western Pacific

The carrier Ticonderoga and a destroyer escort are slated to sail for Vietnam, joining other West Coast carriers Enterprise and Ranger in overhaul transitions. About six destroyers will join the task force, with antiwar groups planning a delayed protest.

Mother hurls sons from overpass onto highway

Los Angeles mother Anna L. Johnson, 32, threw her two sons from the 42nd Street overpass onto the Harbor Freeway and then leaped after them. She was booked on suspicion of assault with intent to commit murder. The boys, Dan 9 and John 5, landed on the roadway and were not struck by cars. John was in critical condition and Dan in serious condition, with their mother in serious condition after landing on a car hood.

Dockers OK lower pay scale ends longest West Coast strike

West Coast longshoremen and the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union with the Pacific Maritime Association announced they would enforce the Feb 10 agreement and Pay Board reductions. Straight time wages rise 42 cents an hour and clerk wages 47.5 cents as the 135 day strike ends.

UPI report says giant B52 bombers dropped over 700 tons near Kontum City to blunt Communist attacks as North Vietnamese tanks moved toward Kontum. South Vietnamese helicopter troops retook Fire Base Bastogne near Hue, the first base reclaimed in the 47 day offensive, while mines were laid in North Vietnam to cut shipping.

Wallace shot while campaigning at Maryland store

Alabama Governor George C. Wallace was shot and critically wounded at a Laurel Maryland shopping center while on a campaign stop. He underwent emergency surgery at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. Four or five bullets struck him and three others. Suspect Arthur Bremer, 21, of Milwaukee, was named by the Justice Department and a .38 revolver was seized by the Secret Service. Aides said Wallace was in good condition and doctors warned paralysis could occur from a bullet near the spine.
