Douglas Wind Tunnel Dedication Tests Mach 20 Speed

Douglas Aircraft Co dedicates the Aerophysics Laboratory in El Segundo with a supersonic wind tunnel reaching nearly Mach 4 and a plan for future hypersonic and hypervelocity testing. Donald Douglas Jr notes completion in 1960 and higher speed facilities to follow, including Mach 18 testing and a Mach 5 wind tunnel.

Damaged DC8 Crew of Eight Unhurt in Hard Landing

A mixed Douglas FAA crew aboard a Long Beach built DC8 suffered a hard landing at Edwards Air Force Base near Palmdale. The $5,000,000 aircraft sustained considerable damage after ripping off a left outboard engine and buckling the fuselage ahead of the tail. None of the eight crew were seriously injured and officials said the incident would not delay the certification schedule.
