Assemblyman Muscell said Brown could head to the Los Angeles convention with about 200 first ballot votes as part of a larger 1,200 delegate convention. Twining Cancer Surgery Clears Path Back to Duty
General Nathan F. Twining, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was recovering from lung cancer surgery at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Officials said the 61 year old is progressing well and should leave the hospital in three to four weeks, with a further two weeks of convalescence before returning to his Pentagon desk. He underwent removal of the upper left lung lobe after being identified as having cancer. Twining recently began a second term appointed by President Eisenhower. He is described by aides as a hard worker and moderate smoker who remains in good physical shape through outdoor activity.
