American car fixation outpaces food spending in 1970s survey
A government survey shows American families spent more on transportation than on food, driven by auto purchases, financing, maintenance and gasoline. The share rose from 15 to 21 percent of consumption in the 1960s to the 1970s, with transportation surpassing food in 1972–73 and housing costs accounting for 34 percent of total consumption in the 1970s while health costs fell slightly. Personal income rose 9.1 percent in 1976 to an average of 6441 dollars, outpacing a 4.8 percent rise in consumer prices.

Tuna boats sail decision tests amid three month strike
A split among tuna boat crews and owners over federal rules keeps crews from returning to sea while some boats may sail today. A new captain and mates group in San Diego voted against sailing, while the owners association signaled some vessels would resume under a compromise bill in Congress aimed at easing net restrictions near porpoises. Representative Murphy urged sailing as talks continue and a tentative plan to extend the Marine Mammal Protection Act to 1978 is weighed.
