Michigan State Workers Press Payroll Stalemate Continues
About 26,000 Michigan state workers continued to work without pay as Governor Williams and the Republican Legislature clashed over a funding solution. The dispute centers on cashing the veterans trust fund and selecting a tax plan to cover payroll, with Williams favoring an income tax and the Legislature pushing sales tax increases. Local offices fear impacts on prisons and mental hospitals, while workers borrow against pay via unions and banks.
