Long Beach Rotarians hosted an Easter party for children at three city nurseries. About 200 youngsters searched for colored eggs with volunteers, enjoying ice cream cookies and candy eggs as adults shared conversation and humor.
Representatives of five oil companies were arraigned in Municipal Court on charges of violating city clean-up-the-air fields restrictions. Defendants faced alleged derrick structural faults and more than five percent petroleum-coated surfaces within 150 feet of A road. City inspectors warned to remedy conditions noted as of July 23, 1957. Thomas Richmond, for Lomita Operating Co., pled guilty for a derrick at 3175 Long Beach Blvd and secured one-year probation after promising recent remediation.
A San Pedro man threatened narcotics officers with a gun during a street clash on Pacific Coast Highway. Officers fired twice as three young men, two Marines, were arrested amid scuffle with McMahan and Robertson. Suspects include Kirkbright, Mills, Cook, Picard, and others. Officers and bystanders clashed near Vernon and Linden avenues. multiple structures and firms linked to the incident were named.
A winter storm slammed the central and eastern United States with 12 to 38 inches of snow and savage winds up to 50 miles per hour creating huge drifts. Tornadoes caused damage in Pelham Tennessee Citronelle Alabama Atlanta and Waukegan Illinois with no major injuries reported. Elizabeth Taylor converted to Judaism at Temple Israel of Hollywood shrouding her marriage to Mike Todd and relationship with Eddie Fisher. Robert Frost celebrated his 89th birthday at the Library of Congress with a prediction Kennedy would become president. Venezuelan ex-dictator Marcus Perez Jimenez, exiled in Miami Beach, was ordered to leave the United States by April 15, affecting his wife and four children.
The Martin Co. announced a 4.2 million dollar contract to expand its Mace program, as a routine test saw the Mace unit blast away from Holloman Air Base in New Mexico.
The 26 000 ton luxury liner Santa Rosa collided with an empty oil tanker Valehem off Atlantic City. Four crewmen aboard the tanker were presumed dead, three missing, and one firefighter from Los Angeles died after being taken off the vessel. Sixteen crew members were injured while passengers and most crew remained uninjured aboard the ship. Weather cited as foggy by some sources, but Grace Line said conditions were clear.
The Communications Workers of America union members at several California locals reported incomplete results after ballots on a one year contract with General Telephone Co. The Long Beach Local 9571 voted 320 to 113 in favor, Downey and Bellflower locals rejected the proposal 400 to 161. Court and tax actions ripple through the region as government offices enter recess for Easter.

Robertson fled a police car as Kirkbright wrestled with five men on a street. Kirkbright drew a gun during the melee, and McMahan and other officers intervened. Kirkbright was booked for assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct while Pickard and Cook faced similar charges. A bystander was seen fleeing as officers restrained the group near two buildings on Pacific Coast Highway.
At Cape Canaveral Florida the Air Force launched a Thor intermediate range ballistic missile for the 26th time. The 65-foot rocket rose at 8 02 p m Pacific time and produced a white flame while blinking for tracking before fading from view after about ten minutes.
