Supreme Court voids antidraft picket conviction over abusive words
The Supreme Court ruled 5-2 that an antidraft picket near Atlanta in 1966 could not be punished for cursing and threatening police, striking down the abusive language Georgia law. Justice Brennan said fighting words may be punished only if likely to start a fight, with dissents criticizing the decision as misguided. The court also allowed debtors to challenge garnishment of bank accounts under an 1846 civil rights law, in a separate ruling.
