Indians deny title claim on missions
A group of about six Indians encamped at Mission San Antonio in Monterey County say they never sought title to California's 21 missions. Medicine man Semu Huante says the aim was to beautify and restore spiritual heritage, not claim ownership. They blame spokesman Meredith Quinn for drafting a manifesto to Bishop Harry Klinch demanding mission lands. The bishop warned of legal action if they did not leave peacefully.
