Clear air turbulence threat to large planes cited
Air Force research expert Neal V. Loving warned CAT unseen in clear skies continues to menace even the largest aircraft. At a FAA sponsored turbulence symposium he said current data answer some questions but raise doubts about prevailing theory and noted the Air Force’s ALLCAT program is funding further study.

Noise curb urged for trucks and buses by state panel
A Sacramento advisory panel urged the Legislature to sharply cut motor vehicle noise. By 1978, new trucks and buses over 6,000 pounds should emit no more than 80 decibels, while all other vehicles should be limited to 75 decibels. The panel, composed of scientists, business and government reps under the Health Department, warns noise from vehicles is a major offense to many people. The report highlights turbulence data needs for safe flight and cites past aviation cases and research by the National Center for Atmospheric Research on clear-air turbulence in the stratosphere.
