In Brussels thousands of farmers from six Western European nations rampaged in the Belgian capital. They burned, looted and clashed with police and residents during a demonstration demanding higher farm prices.

The state attorney general's office says a farmer was shot dead by a policeman, who was then slashed in the throat by demonstrators. Officials report over 150 injured, including police and civilians, as clashes spread along the five mile route. Display windows smashed shops looted and cars burned during the march involving about 70,000 participants.

Faulkner sworn in as Northern Ireland prime minister

BELFAST new Prime Minister Brian Faulkner took the oath and urged unity to restore order amid three years of terror and urban guerrilla violence. He pledged direct rule if his government cannot pacify riot-torn streets and halt attacks. Faulkner defeated William Craig for the post in a Unionist caucus, 26 to 4.

Supreme Court narrows field in mercury case

The Supreme Court narrowed its jurisdiction in a suit by Ohio to shield Lake Erie from mercury pollution. In an 8-1 decision Justice Douglas dissented. The ruling follows another month of limiting major cases, with Justice Harlan noting the evolving role of the court.
