Gladstone diaries reveal masochism and sexual struggle
The third and fourth volumes of William Gladstone's diaries edited by Colin Matthew and published by Oxford University Press show the statesman grappling with sexual temptations and a secret life, including relief through helping prostitutes, while denying infidelity. The diaries cover 1840 to 1854 as his political path strained his personal beliefs.
