SAN FRANCISCO AP The FDA will move to legalize megavitamins such as vitamins A C and D following a court ruling in favor of Linus Pauling and others challenging the agency. FDA attorney Jay Geller noted restrictions would hinge on toxicity, while examining public misperceptions and disagreements from eminent scientists about the regulation. Pauling argued vitamin C prevents colds and aids immune function, citing decades of tests showing cures for hepatitis and other benefits though skeptics dispute his claims.
GAO report criticizes FAA for delaying action on NTSB safety recommendations and losing files. From 1970 to 1974 the NTSB issued 655 safety tips. 222 remained open as of 1974. Example cited: FAA delayed eliminating fabric to metal seatbelt buckles, despite early NTSB advice.
Dr Kenneth C Edelin of Boston's hospital described receiving thousands of letters about his manslaughter conviction for a fetus abortion. He said most mail supported him yet a small abusive minority was antiabortion and often attacked his mother. He criticized the trial and said he would be glad to never perform another abortion.
