Portland voters soundly defeated a measure to ban promotively advertised liquors, with early returns from 904 of 2018 precincts showing 82,350 against and 30,571 for. A veterans bonus measure, similar to the Wisconsin program, trailed with 59,573 opposed and 6,803 in favor.
Early returns from 232 of 942 precincts show Hosmer leading Doyle in the 18th District with 22,153 to 21,124. In the 70th District Long Beach area results favor Hosmer 12,679 to 11,463, while Doyle’s margin in the 69th District remains smaller than expected.
A fragment warns that polls are not closed and victory boasts are premature. It urges national unity to strengthen the home front for impending military fronts while noting political charges against Communists have lost potency amid election concerns.
Arizona remained in doubt as 250 of 482 precincts reported. GOP candidate Howard Pyle led Ann Frohmiller by 33,860 to 32,156, while incumbents including Congressman and Senator Carl Hayden drew large margins.
At midnight Warren held a substantial lead over Roosevelt for attorney general as returns from 7850 precincts showed Warren ahead in governor and Roosevelt trailing for senator. Nixon led over Douglas by a wide margin and issued a victory statement promising changes in the State Department.
Long Beach reflected the statewide GOP win with voters backing Gov. Earl Warren and Richard Nixon for U S Senate. Early counts showed Pat Brown ahead for attorney general, while Long Beach favored Prop 10 and opposed Prop 6 and Prop L, with Trop. 10 on housing measures.
