Escape tunnels found at Camp Koje Island Prison Camp
Army engineers disclosed three secret tunnels leading from Compound 76 at Camp Koje Island Korea May 26 suggesting some Hed prisoners may have escaped. One tunnel reached outside the camp while two opened into nearby prison enclosures. Authorities speculated the inner tunnels aided communications with commissars. another possible outside exit may have been unused. A spokesman said the Reds had an arsenal of crude weapons and even a Jeep fashioned from scavenged parts.

Oil Tanker and Barge Collide in Delaware River Fire
A WPA report says a 14441 ton oil tanker and a towing tug collided in a rainstorm near Wilmington on the lower Delaware River, bursting into flames. At least one man is dead and another injured. flames rose up to 200 feet from the burning barge offshore near Augustine Beach. The tanker’s blaze was later described as under control while the barge burned about a mile offshore. A man clung to a jetty after screams were heard in the river and was brought ashore.
