A massive five alarm fire in South Philadelphia damaged a pier and the British merchant ship Pineland injuring 39 people. Twenty eight crew members jumped into the Delaware River to escape the blaze and save their lives.

Detectives Kennedy and Jacobsen broke into the ring at 4154 Business St Apt 6 and, with an Independent observer, pursued a top man believed to run the operation. In Tokyo on May 19 the Second United States Infantry Division fought furiously to hold a dangerous gap as Chinese forces attacked along the east central front. Reports say the Red assault aimed at a giant pincers movement to envelop Allied lines while the division fought to reach a new defensive position. General Van Fleet and Major General Ruffner praised the unit's defense and heavy casualties inflicted, noting claims of 10,000 Chinese killed.
Sacramento May 18 George H. McLain a Los Angeles pension leader and six aides were granted a hearing before a Senate committee next Thursday to contest the denial of their lobbyist credentials in the legislature.
County Health Officer Roy O. Gikkert today warned measles are reaching epidemic proportions in Southern Los Angeles County. In the past month new cases have more than doubled among children in Inglewood Bellflower Torrance and Compton.
