Car Plunges From Guard Rail Into River Near Ocean Blvd

Early today a car traveling east from Pico Ave spun out and plummeted 25 feet from the West Ocean Blvd bridge into the river bed. Radarman 3/C William L. Mickle, 21, of the USS Gurke, a driver, and shipmate Ray Grub, 21, plus Dawn Thomas, 23 of Los Angeles, were passengers. All escaped with only minor injuries.

Storm hits Florida coast with 75 mph winds near center

A late forming hurricane raced off the Atlantic toward the Florida Gold Coast. Winds neared 75 miles per hour in a small zone north and east of the eye while the Miami Weather Bureau urged small craft to stay in port and warned that dangerous winds should be diminishing along the coast.
