A late Friday buying surge lifted stock markets with steel leading gains while oils and retail shares fell. The Associated Press average rose 20 cents to 5115 asindustrial issues advanced, railroads rose, utilities slipped on Southern Natural Gas ex dividend. Volume reached 1,760,000 shares with 54 new highs and 6 new lows.
SAN FRANCISCO UK Ron Dolph Sevier president of Matson Navigation Company reported a net income of 4 011 284 from all operations for the year. Excluding Oceanic Steamship Company the income was 185 608. A 66 day maritime strike reduced Oceanic profits and rising labor costs were cited. Sevier noted multiple separate union agreements as a complicating factor.
Orange shipping in California stayed in balance as 150 fewer cars were shipped than last week. Sunkist growers announced guidance for steady shipments to keep prices profitable. Demand remained light with sales around 250 cars, matching the prior week.
Gordon Giblin was reelected president of the port local of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union, winning 1557 to 973 over Carl Walter. Robert Resta conductor and founder of the Long Beach Philharmonic Orchestra was honored Friday night at Municipal Auditorium’s Concert Hall during the 75th concert. The orchestra marks its 17th season as Dr. John A. Harris presented Resta with a scroll of appreciation for founding the group and promoting finer music in the area. Resta, Italian-born, came to the United States at 18 and studied on a Juilliard scholarship. He served as a conductor for Army bands in World War I.
Tokyo dispatch reports three repatriation ships sailed for Red China to recover Japanese held by Communists. A fourth ship sails Sunday. authorities estimate about 50,000 Japanese remain on the mainland. Ships expected to reach Shanghai Taku and Canton and return by late March with thousands of repatriates. A 13 man Japanese delegation returned after Peiping talks.
Yugoslav sources say President Tito will seek British jet aircraft to match Soviet air power in Bulgaria Czechoslovakia and Hungary while he travels by ship to London. He plans to press leaders over MIG supplies and bolster Yugoslav defenses amid Cold War tensions.
In Maryland, former governor William Preston Lane Jr acknowledged financing part of a secret operation to remove a Soviet built MIG-15 from Poland. He said he and others funded the plan but refused to reveal amounts or identify associates. The plane was flown to Denmark by Lt.
