Buying Rush Lifts Markets In Final Friday Surge

A late Friday buying surge lifted stock markets with steel leading gains while oils and retail shares fell. The Associated Press average rose 20 cents to 5115 asindustrial issues advanced, railroads rose, utilities slipped on Southern Natural Gas ex dividend. Volume reached 1,760,000 shares with 54 new highs and 6 new lows.

Matson Profit at 3. Million

SAN FRANCISCO UK Ron Dolph Sevier president of Matson Navigation Company reported a net income of 4 011 284 from all operations for the year. Excluding Oceanic Steamship Company the income was 185 608. A 66 day maritime strike reduced Oceanic profits and rising labor costs were cited. Sevier noted multiple separate union agreements as a complicating factor.

Leader, Founder of Philharmonic in L. B. Honored

Robert Resta conductor and founder of the Long Beach Philharmonic Orchestra was honored Friday night at Municipal Auditorium’s Concert Hall during the 75th concert. The orchestra marks its 17th season as Dr. John A. Harris presented Resta with a scroll of appreciation for founding the group and promoting finer music in the area. Resta, Italian-born, came to the United States at 18 and studied on a Juilliard scholarship. He served as a conductor for Army bands in World War I.

Japanese Craft Sail to Pick Up Red Held POWs

Tokyo dispatch reports three repatriation ships sailed for Red China to recover Japanese held by Communists.
