Forced Vote Here on City Sales Tax
City councilmen may vote soon to impose a 1.5 million dollar city sales tax. Councilman Clarence E. Wagner, returning from a Sacramento meeting, said the League of California Cities endorsed increasing the state sales tax to four cents and allows cities to keep added revenue if they pass specific ordinances. Wagner warned the move would push all cities to adopt sales taxes to secure their share. He noted some oppose city sales taxes but favor central state collection. A Long Beach Chamber survey estimates retail trade around 350 to 400 million dollars. even with exemptions, revenue could approach 0.5 percent of that, with last fiscal year city property taxes about 3.1 million. Wagner and Carl Fleisher joined the Sacramento meeting as members of the council legislative committee.
