Korea Combat Bonus Doomed in House Action
Washington June 9 The House Armed Services Committee almost shut the door on any year end approval of a Korea combat bonus for GIs and signaled no progress on an Air Force academy or anti strike measures. Chairman Carl Vinson said final action will await tomorrow’s session to approve a $52.8 billion military construction bill and no other major legislation. The panel also approved extending a $100 monthly bonus for doctors and dentists entering service, while physicians drafted do not qualify. Senate action recently approved a $45 monthly combat bonus, but a conference panel trimmed that and the House stance ended hopes for a quick bonus bill. Vinson warned no promises were made.
