Gotham Area Hit by Quick Thunderstorm

A fast moving thunderstorm lashed New York New Jersey and Long Island with gusts near hurricane force. Glass shattered in skyscrapers and power lines toppled. Long Island Power Co reported record damage from the half hour storm and the Empire State Building swayed under the blast.

Union and Big Steel Break Off Talks Amid Crisis

Senate leaders who had delayed action move to push amendments to the controls law granting Truman emergency powers during the strike. Presidential Assistant John R. Stedman announced the abrupt breakdown after five days of White House sponsored bargaining. Earlier, officials suggested a quick settlement as Truman said the aerontinal might be near agreement.

Paratroopers Seize Koje Island Compounds in Battle

American troops captured Koje prison communists and crushed two compounds after heavy fighting that killed at least 30 prisoners and one U S soldier. Fourteen paratroopers and many prisoners were wounded as authorities moved to end commissar rule among the island’s 80 000 inmates. A secret tunnel linked compounds 76 and 77 as troops halted uprisings and routed guards during the operation.
