Shipowners Sailors Spurn Truce Efforts
San Francisco June 7. Federal conciliator Omar Yieskins failed to renew talks between ship owners and striking sailors as Matson liner Lurline and over 30 other ships remain idle on the West Coast. Pickets monitor unloading as lines will be set to deter reloading. The Lurline, due to Honolulu, faces freezing status if no settlement by late tomorrow. The Sailors Union of the Pacific demands higher pay, overtime, and negotiation rights. 32 ships are affected along the coast including nine in San Francisco Bay.
