$24 Million For 26 Civic Jobs Urged

Twenty six projects estimated to cost 24,074,980 were recommended for submission to the voters next Apr 3 in preliminary action by two subcommittees conducting public hearings in the City Council chamber. Four integrated health and hospital projects totaling 16,382,000 were ranked highest priority by the public health subcommittee. Nearly 100 civic and professional representatives spoke in support, with two dissents. The main citizens group will report a list of projects to the City Council by Jan 16.

Storm Bears On Upstate Storm Bears On Upstate

A North Pacific storm bore down on Northern California Monday night with heavy rains, mountain snow, and gale winds forecast by morning. Light to moderate rain fell in the north, with intermittent snow in the Sterma and Siskiyou regions. Storm warnings extended along the coast from Oregon to Santa Barbara with winds 35 to 56 mph, and gusts up to 60 mph possible in the Sacramento Valley per the weather bureau.

Nine Burned as Gasoline Pipeline Breaks

A pipeline explosion on a Lawndale street set off by a ditch-digging machine showered flaming gasoline across 4000 block of W Compton Blvd. Nine people were burned including a mother and her six children and two workers. Fire units battled flames for 3.5 hours as hospitals treated second and third-degree burns. Authorities said the gas line carried 200 to 300 psi.

30 Foot Seas Hit Eniwetok In Pacific Typhoon

A typhoon inundated Eniwetok with 30 foot waves Sunday and damaged some buildings at the atomic weapons test base. About 500 Americans on the low-lying coral island faced rising seas, while forecasters warned of continuing drenching showers and winds up to 70 miles per hour as the center of the storm passed south of the island. Draft Chief Would End Enlistments

SACRAMENTO Major General Lewis B. Hershey, national selective service director, called to abolish enlistments and have the armed forces draft manpower. He said draftees should receive lower pay, serve two years, and that many discharged annually drain the draft pool. He suggested reexamining deferments for fathers and students.

Clark Boosts Rotation Points For Korean War Troops

War-Dodger Rubinstein Ordered Out

Washington Attorney General James P. McGranery on Monday ordered Serge M. Rubinstein a Russian-born financier to surrender for deportation. Rubinstein, age 46, served two years in Lewisburg federal penitentiary for draft dodging in World War II and now faces transfer to Ellis Island without bail pending ouster arrangements. He may appeal, and his deportation has been twice resisted by courts and immigration authorities since 1943.
