Storm Stalls Cars and Floods Downey Streets

The Werther Bureau warned of more heavy rains today with new rainfall records likely before the storm ends tomorrow. Long Beach reported 1.50 inches by 11:30 p.m. and 4.32 inches season total, while Downey saw 3.21 inches by 5 p.m., flooding streets and stoves.

45th Now In Combat in Korea United Nations action

Tokyo December 30 United States Army confirms Oklahoma based 44th Infantry Division is fighting with UN forces in Korea. The 1st Field Artillery Battalion of the National Guard unit entered action in support of front line UN troops in early October. The 45th is the first National Guard division sent to a combat zone since World War II amid Pentagon censorship.

Atlantic Storm Halts Ships and Kills Seamen

A fierce Atlantic storm claimed four seamen of various nationalities and a U S freighter passenger dead as winds reached 122 miles per hour. The Queen Mary endured a brutal crossing with 42 injuries, seas smashed cabins, and passengers clinging to carpets. The Flying Enterprise listing severely near Ireland received aid from two American ships while a salvage effort continued for the crew and captain.

Flood relief centers set up in Bell y and Artesia areas

Red Cross established flood relief and evacuation centers at John S. Simms Park in Bell y and at Catholic at Artesia. Disaster relief chairman said no families had been evacuated yet and none expected unless more rain arrives. Tours of stricken areas are ongoing, with Uvallan Gardens identified as heavily hit. In Downey downtown, the C. Pemney store floor was submerged by several inches.

12 Injured in Iowa Railroad Mishap

A gaping hole ripped the first diesel unit and windows on one side of a streamliner. The crash occurred near Gault eleven miles east of here as the train rolled into the station at North Western. Clinton doctors treated passengers and eye specialists removed glass fragments. The train was traveling about 170 miles per hour when the mishap occurred.
