Chinese Move To River Defense Near Korangpo Front

An Eighth Army spokesman said China attempts to bridge the Imjin near Korangpo, 27 miles northwest of Seoul, as Chinese forces push to the river. Allied air and artillery strikes followed with reports of units advancing toward fallen Korangpo and advancing enemy engineers. A UN briefing officer said east coast elements withdrew about 7 miles under heavy pressure, with another friendly battalion suffering losses.

New Year Holiday Toll Set at 330

The National Safety Council predicted the New Year’s holiday weekend would see at least 330 traffic deaths in the United States from 6 p.m. CST Friday to midnight Monday. The estimate follows about 550 deaths during the Christmas weekend, one of the nation’s largest totals.
