A brutal cold wave grips a vast area from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Coast. Temperatures plunge well below zero with readings as low as 35 below in Decorah and Lone Rock Wisconsin and 34 below in Sparta Wisconsin. The core cold stretches into Georgia and Louisiana.
WASTTING TON Dec 28 Agriculture officials said price controls may force rationing. If price controls are imposed a meat shortage could arise, prompting rationing in many food lines. Officials note that without changes from current trends rationing might not be needed, but price controls early next year make rationing a virtual certainty.

The Long Beach Yule Lighting Contest crowned indoor display winner D. W. Dotson of 159 Riva Alto Canal and outdoor decorations champion Mrs. Frank Welle of 122 Royerall Ave amid 94 entries. Special awards went to Ambrose D. Farina and W. Schinnerer. Schinnerer had won last year. Brent Williams, contest chairman, received a plaque for assisting the Junior Chamber of Commerce contest.
