Harbor Area Faces Flood and Sand Boils Risk
Harbor area residents along the Embarcadero to Channel 3 live on danger’s edge. Engineer J H Davies told the Board of Harbor Commissioners that subsidence and subsurface sand boils threaten the west peninsula near Channels 2 and 3. He advised building an earth dike by the Procter and Gamble plant as water seeps through land. Davies warned of constant pumping and gas line breaks, with 219 utility breaks in eight months. He said the area south of Channel 3 is a gigantic bath tub and that private property is repeatedly pumped to stay dry. Chief Engineer R R Shoemaker noted the Tier D area near the entrance channel requires ongoing pumping. The danger extends to west of Flood Control to Ontario and First Street, with future relocation likely in about one year due to bridge and road programs. Commissioners pressed for time, and City Engineer Jess Gilkerson said a remedial plan east to Rainbow Pier would be brought to City Council in two weeks.

Explosion Burns Two Huntington Beach Fishermen on Skylark
A 50 foot fishing boat Skylark exploded and burned off San Clemente Island injuring two Huntington Beach men severely. Robert Adair age 33 suffered third degree burns and Robert W. Quarn age 36 second degree burns. They were rescued by crew from Charmie and transferred to San Diego Naval Hospital. A third and fourth crewman were injured lightly or unnamed. The Skylark, owned by B E Hoffinger of Newport Beach, is among Long Beach and San Diego harbor fleet losses this year.

Woman killed by own car in Hill Street collision
