Son Manning Survives Hobson Collision and Sinking
Mrs Mary Safly hears from Charleston Navy Base that her son Harry K. E. Manning a seaman on the minesweeper Hobson survived a collision and sinking in the Atlantic. This is Manning’s second disaster after being wounded aboard the USS Nevada in the Pearl Harbor attack.

Destroyer Hobson Sinks After Collision With Wasp
The destroyer minesweeper Hobson sank in the Atlantic after a night collision with the aircraft carrier Wasp. Sixty one survivors were rescued. 176 were missing, including Hobson's skipper Lt Cmdr W J Tierney. Winds reached 17 mph as both ships, moving at 20 to 25 knots, rammed amidships. Escapes Two Sinkings Son Rescued Mother Learns Here
Silent prayers of a Long Beach mother for the safety of her Navy son were answered when word came that Harry K. Manning, 28, a boatswain's mate aboard the minesweeper Hobson, survived the ship's collision with the aircraft carrier Wasp in the Atlantic. Manning's mother, Mary Lafly, 45, of 5712 Capetown St., learned the news by phone six hours after the Hobson sank. The call came from Manning's wife, Glenda Wise, from the couple's Navy base home in Charleston, N.C. Manning previously survived the sinking of USS Nevada at Pearl Harbor.
