Taft Edges Ike in Five State Race for Delegates
Sen. Robert A. Taft edged Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower in a five state selection of 63 delegates to the Republican nominating convention. Taft gained several delegates at large and in key states, while Eisenhower's camp, led by Gov. Dan Thornton, secured a Wisconsin-like boost in Colorado and other locales. The tally narrowed the race as convention delegates accumulate toward the July Chicago showdown.

Freighter Collision Forces Lifeboats in Heavy Atlantic Fog
In dense fog 10:36 EST off Little Egg Light station, the Sparrow Lines Cape Martin collided with the Portuguese Monte Brasil. The Cape Martin remained operational while the Monte Brasil listed bow down and took on water. crew abandoned in lifeboats as swells rose. Coast Guard reported Portuguese crew members stayed aboard and planned to jump if danger increased.

British General Warns of Atomic Bomb Stockpiles
