Hope seen for some water project funds
House leader Jim Wright said he does not expect a presidential veto of the public works bill though it may include funds for water projects he opposes. Interior Secretary Andrus warned a veto is likely if Congress does not compromise, while noting any veto would be sustained. Wright expects mutual yielding and a few projects surviving, plus progress on an $8 billion Labor and Health Education and Welfare appropriations bill with gradual phasing out of targeted aid programs. He also criticized an abortion amendment as an abomination but suggested it may be softened.
