Califano vows hospital cost curbs face long term reform
Health and Welfare Secretary Joseph Califano told the AMA House of Delegates that a proposed cap on hospital revenues is a transitional step toward deeper structural reform. He urged government action to curb rising costs while noting broader questions about national health insurance. Dr Sammons of AMA criticized the policy as unworkable and warned cost containment may lead to further controls on physician fees.
