Portrait of Student Activist Flexibility and Tolerance
A synthesis of eight studies from Berkeley Chicago and Pennsylvania State University summarized by Dr Joseph Katz for the U S Office of Education finds student activists tend to be more flexible tolerant and realistic than nonactivists They come from relatively affluent liberal families with educated parents and close emotional ties Activists show less rebellion against authority and are more oriented to self expression and community responsibility while nonactivists favor success orientation and conventionality The research notes mixed Republican participation and that activists, though a small minority on campuses, produce wide impact through humanities and social sciences inclinations and anti dogmatic attitudes.
