Limitation on government access to tax data urged
The federal privacy commission urged strict limits on use and sharing of income tax data while stopping short of a rule that only the tax collector sees returns. It urged that voluntary returns not be treated as a general government asset and favored courtroom orders for access by prosecutors before IRS releases individual returns for investigations. The panel said many agencies routinely handle tax information and rejected a blanket ban on such dissemination.
