Killer Smog Seen In Long Beach In 75

Long Beach faces severe air pollution concerns as experts debate killer smogs. Robert L. Chass of the Los Angeles County air pollution control district challenges Watt’s dire forecast, citing sulfur dioxide and particulates from refineries and power plants and offshore breezes that push pollution into the basin. State studies show sulfur dioxide rules violated 20 percent of 1968 readings, with highest particulates near LAX and nearby refineries. To meet standards, sulfur dioxide must drop 64 percent and particulates 54 percent. Whether smogs arrive, cleansing the skies remains essential.
